Today's Challenges
The main objective of any solution that integrates mobile phones into the corporate communications infrastructure is that it must:
- Must allow the same set of call handling features both on fixed and mobile, thus increasing productivity;
- Must be easy to use and manage;
- Must not require any change in end-user behavior;
- Must be built on open standards and proven components;
- Must be future proof and interoperable with existing networks;
- Must consider security;
- Must enable single number reach;
- Must enable savings and control of communication costs; and
- Must reduce cost of operations of heterogeneous networks.
Emerging Voice over IP (VoIP or IP-telephony) has managed to solve only parts of these challenges. It allows end-users to choose among various communication tools, such as desktop phones, softphones on the PC, IP phones, video communication and application sharing tools, selecting the most appropriate for the current situation. More and more voice traffic is running over IP globally. This is important, but it’s far from revolutionary to meeting business needs. VoIP has not yet proved useful when it comes to controlling and lowering mobile calling costs.
The industry has been putting much emphasis on empowering users of fixed and IP-phones with direct access to corporate directories, one-touch call transfers, group-effective conference calling, but has left mobile users with the mere availability of voice-mail.
Enterprises typically have differing PBX Enterprises typically have a variety of PBX solutions, including multi-vendor, TDM, IP etc. No easy solutions exist to mobilize PBX services today without forcing a move to a single vendor solution, which
- Provides the same set of services globally on a single mobile device;
- Can be deployed in-house or offered as managed service;
- Other access network and device independent services;
- Provides a migration path to an all-IP and mobile communication environment;
- Works in heterogeneous PBX networks;
- Can be centrally managed;
- Enables the IP network to be used for fixed and mobile voice interconnect and data services;
- Has support for multiple languages and currencies;
- Requires no or minor capital investments;
- Separates between business and personal connectivity; and
- Has a superior return on investment (ROI).
Today's Solution
With the introduction of end-to-end VoIP services (for further communication cost reduction) such as VoIP on WLAN (VoWLAN), network infrastructure will become increasingly complex due to the coexistence of mobile, PSTN and IP end-user equipment. Specifically, end-user addressing and corporate directory – including contacts – maintenance will become a complex and cumbersome task given the multitude of terminals, numbers, formats and addresses linked to each person. These numbers include everything from fixed the PBX extension number, international corporate number, mobile corporate extension number and prefix to mobile phone number and SIP VoIP address, not to mention differences in national numbering formats.
Eventually this complex heterogeneous network, built on two completely different paradigms, needs to be replaced by a homogenous network to avoid escalating maintenance costs and deteriorating usability.
The chief information officer (CIO) of a multinational enterprise is not going to make any revolutionary changes to replace this system. Any strategy to shift from a PSTN circuit-switched environment to an all-IP infrastructure will be based on migration and evolution.
To enable migration to an all-IP homogenous network a system is needed in the WAN to support simultaneous addressing, routing and media conversion of mobile, PSTN/PBX and VoIP calls.
Telepo Business Communication Solution is designed to fit in with this new paradigm of communication without any legacy dependency, but still be interoperable with the old communication networks.
